Resilient By Design: A Design Preparedness Sprint Workshop

Thailand’s recent encounters with natural disasters highlight an important reality: communities remain vulnerable when preparedness is limited. In Bangkok, even mild earthquake tremors from nearby regions have caused unease, leading to structural cracks and signs of instability in some buildings. These events remind us that in a densely populated city, even moderate seismic activity can have significant consequences. A recent case of building collapse connected to earthquake tremors illustrated how limited awareness and readiness can turn risks into real dangers—not only for infrastructure, but most importantly, for people’s lives. Alongside earthquakes, recurring floods and seasonal storms continue to test local resilience, disrupting livelihoods and placing additional strain on resources. As risks become more complex, many communities still lack practical strategies and shared platforms to prepare for emergencies in ways that are both effective and sustainable. As part of Bangkok Design Week 2026, the Resilient by Design: A Design Preparedness Sprint Workshop seeks to address this need. This half-day program draws on expertise from Australia and Thailand (The University of Queensland and Chulalongkorn University). The project brings together designers and researchers with real-world experience in disaster preparedness. Through design thinking, speculative design, and strategic foresight, participants will explore new ways to reimagine preparedness—co-creating practical tools, testing ideas through collaboration, and building the confidence to act. More than just raising awareness, this workshop aims to empower participants to design resilience into their own communities, ensuring that the next disruption becomes an opportunity to respond with strength, adaptability, and care.
