Stories of the Mahanak Community Told Through Maps and Photographs
This exhibition showcases the results of a youth-led participatory project in which young people from the Mahanak community become storytellers — transforming the neighborhood’s memories, histories, and identities into creative works of art in the form of maps and photographic narratives.
Community Map: Tracing the Stories
The community map captures Mahanak through the eyes of its youth. More than just identifying landmarks and built structures, it illustrates the social landscape of the neighborhood with original graphic symbols representing places like mosques, cemeteries, artisan homes, and youth gathering spots. This map is not merely a physical depiction — it is a storytelling tool that reveals the rhythms of everyday life, human connections, and the identity of the community.
Stories Through Photography
Memory Portraits: Photographs and narratives from elder residents, preserving personal memories that intertwine with the area’s historical layers.
Youth Perspectives: Photographs by young storytellers highlighting spaces significant to them — from gathering points and vulnerable zones to vibrant economic hubs.
When combined with storytelling, these images form a vivid narrative thread that bridges the past and present.
Hosted at the historic Asvin Building in the heart of Mahanak, the exhibition transforms this heritage site into a shared public space for dialogue and exchange — inviting community members, neighbors, and collaborators to connect and reflect.
More than a documentation of history, Stories Flow: The Mahanak Chronicle offers a fresh perspective on the identity of this historic neighborhood and celebrates the power of a new generation to shape the meaning — and the future — of the place they call home.
