ViaBus — Inspire the Masses with Mass Transit
ViaBus is a real-time public transit tracking application that helps passengers plan their journeys with confidence by tracking buses, boats, and rail systems in real time. Users can view route and stop information and search for travel options. The app is free to download on iOS and Android. Today, ViaBus has more than 8 million users and provides services across Thailand, as well as in Malaysia, Laos, and Japan.
Bangkok Design Week originates from the creative industries and serves as a festival that invites the general public to participate in design experiences across different creative districts. One key challenge, however, lies in transportation: many creative “hidden gems” are not easily accessible by rail alone.
In terms of transportation, the main problems are that buses often arrive late and lack clear timetables. Moreover, travel information is difficult to access; details shown at stops are insufficient, subject to frequent changes, and cause passengers to lose confidence in their journeys. On the Bangkok Design Week side, visitors still face difficulties exploring venues. While there have been past solutions, they required separate access across multiple systems, without integration. At the same time, there is an opportunity to expand the festival’s reach beyond the creative industry and encourage broader community participation.
ViaBus proposes integrating Bangkok Design Week 2026 into the app under the concept “Inspire the Masses with Mass Transit,” enabling both the general public and tourists to fully access and participate in the event through convenient, easy-to-use public transit. The idea emphasizes that travel should not be just a way to reach venues, but an integral part of the festival experience itself. This turns transportation into a connector that brings large groups of people into the world of creativity, creating a sense of inclusion, and reflecting the festival as accessible, sustainable, and open to everyone.
What ViaBus will do is co-create and integrate all festival venues into the app, with UX/UI designed for seamless access to details and exploration without switching between platforms. The integration will also incorporate the festival’s corporate identity (CI branding) into the user experience to ensure continuity and consistency. For each venue, users can simply select it and immediately search for public transport routes to get there. This integration will connect to all modes of transit — buses, boats, rail systems, and even special shuttle services organized exclusively for the festival.
Integrating ViaBus with Bangkok Design Week 2026 clearly reflects the three pillars of the DESIGN S/O/S theme. Under Secure Domestic, this integration stimulates the festival to better reach local communities, giving Bangkok residents and the wider public greater opportunities to engage with design across diverse districts. For Outreach Opportunities, it enhances accessibility for international visitors and positions Bangkok Design Week as a model festival that demonstrates how integration with public transit can be replicated in other countries where ViaBus already operates, such as Malaysia, Laos, and Japan. Finally, under Sustainable Future, ViaBus ensures lasting impact: the app is not just a temporary festival tool, but one that continues to serve users in their daily lives, promoting sustainable public transit use long after the event ends. This shows how design can be a true driving force for greener, more livable cities.
