Trok Kamphaeng It: Ready for S/O/S

Project organized by a group of students and faculty members of the Doctor of Philosophy in Design Arts (DinDA) and Master of Fine Arts in Design Arts (MinDA), International Program, Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University Trok Kamphaeng It: Ready for S/O/S This project extends and elevates our design-for-community practice—from site exploration and pilot activities during BKKDW 2024—toward fully committing to “Make / Let / Survive” in 2026. DinDA & MinDA will use Trok Kamphaeng It, a historic private alley in the Banglamphu district now in transition, as a living testbed. Through a community-engaged design process that blends art, light, colou, sound, and participatory programming, we aim to transform an overlooked passage into a prototype Livable Cultural Scape—vibrant, safe, and sustainably impactful across economic, social, and cultural dimensions—fully aligned with the core theme DESIGN S/O/S. Why Trok Kamphaeng It & Why “Ready for S/O/S” “Trok Kamphaeng It” possesses a distinctive charm—an emblem of Bangkok with roots stretching back to the late Rattanakosin era now adapting dynamically to contemporary life. Evolving from a traditional residential–commercial community into a multicultural quarter, legacy trades and emerging businesses are finding ways to coexist. Our BKKDW 2024 work revealed both the area’s potential and its challenges. As BKKDW 2026 signals “ready to go” under the DESIGN S/O/S theme, DinDA & MinDA—as a design school—answer that call by opening an operational creative field on the offensive, the defensive, and the frontline, using design knowledge as a tool to “Make / Let / Survive.” We will operate under three core design concepts: - Design IN (dividuality): Designing with respect for and amplifying each shop’s and resident’s unique identity. - Design WITH Community: Designing through interaction and genuine participation with local stakeholders. - Design FOR Community Promotion: Designing to communicate and publicise the neighbourhood’s charm to broader audiences “Seep In” Design Exhibition in Shops: In collaboration with local businesses—such as Lemondcurd and others—we will curate small-scale design showcases by DinDA & MinDA students tailored to each venue’s identity, offering fresh experiences to customers and visitors. “Breathe Out” Graffiti & Environmental Design: Create wall and ground artworks that reinterpret Banglamphu narratives (lotus, lumphu trees, riverine life) into contemporary graphics—beautifying distressed spots while telling local stories. Street Lighting Design for Safety & Quality of Living: Design and install public-area lighting with warm-white tones to enhance safety and visual comfort, while accentuating architecture and artworks at night. “Diffuse & Radiate” Music Performance & Sound Installation: Partner with ASMR student groups from PGVIM (Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music) to stage abstract, semi-performance music that plays with soft textures and rhythm—counterbalancing urban noise and enriching visitor experience. Community Talk & Seminar: Host intimate alley-side forums among locals, designers, and interested publics on history, futures, and co-development pathways. Target Audience - Residents and businesses of Trok Kamphaeng It and Banglamphu - Thai and international visitors - Bangkok Design Week 2026 attendees - School and university students - Urban/design enthusiasts and the general public int
