NABA, NUOVA ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI

A new paradigm for the contemporary hybrid city.

Digital and technological development has radically changed the nature of cities. Today, the city is a hybrid. Its physical body is intertwined with the immaterial dimension of digital services and platforms, with new forms of aggregation on social media, with new systems for collecting data and information, with new parallel, virtual, mixed, augmented realities, metaverses and multiverses. The new hybrid quality of the city, which is both real and virtual, produces new ways of experiencing space and time within the city itself. Are global cities capable of governing this new hybrid dimension, or are they dangerously exposed to its unpredictability? The traditional idea of urban planning and urban design seems to be no longer able to interpret or govern the levels of complexity and diversity that are intrinsic to the contemporary city. But a radically new form of urban design is emerging, deeply rooted in social design practices, community activism and bottom-up initiatives. This lecture aims to highlight the key elements of this ongoing transformation, as well as suggest guidelines for developing a new form of urban design based on social equity, social inclusion, ecological awareness, biodiversity and the mobilisation of citizenships. This talk session will be conducted in English only. You can register to participate for free through the festival's registration portal and watch it on Facebook Live: Bangkok Design Week.
