Presence in Remainders
“Presence in Remainders” is an interactive installation exhibit in the center of “Samyan” specifically in a lost yet abandoned space of the area. This interactive installation features a concept of maximizing the utilization of what is considered as one’s “residue” in all scales including this “residual space”. The interactive aims to preserve and cherish the uniqueness of this Teochew Chinese community, their religion, and culture while strengthening community bonds and boosting local economies. Through all aspects of design, we implement art into the cityscape erupting as a meeting place, an activity hub, and a new heartwarming having in “Samyan”
Our installation design carefully demonstrates the perspective and redefines the definition of this triangle residual space, encouraging visitors to explore the Tiger God Shrine. By opening and closing the sightlines of the shrine, we create a rhythmic experience while preserving the community’s essence embodied by the shrine. Traditional Chinese art and architecture elements are incorporated into the installation by adding simplicity in graphic translation and referencing the local eateries and shophouses symbolized through plastic baskets. Our endeavor goes beyond art; it addresses community space challenges and increases economic growth.
The lighting design not only brightens the community but also reduces accidents, crime rates, and insecurity within the area. Ultimately establishing a new landmark, attracting outsiders and tourists.
We design in every scale and aspect in order to curate a pleasant experience for visitors. Enabling interactions with the artwork and allowing for possible collaborative activities, we employ the practice of “Syamsi,” a cultural and religious traditional practice of the Tiger God Shrine, allowing visitors to receive fortunes and leave behind negative feelings, “the residual feelings”, on the artwork’s walls. This overtime becomes a new sanctuary for the community’s well-being.
When all is said and done, this is about making sure that even the ‘remnants’ have their significance, that they are far from being ‘zero’: having its “Presence in Remainders”
