COMMUNITY LAB Founded in 2020, COMMUNITY LAB {Nanglerng} is a collective, cultural node, and a community center founded, run, and organized by community members who grew up and live in Nanglerng, as well as artists, academics, and historians who work with Nanglerng, a slum community in the old town of Bangkok, Thailand. Previously called Buffalo Field or E-lerng, Nanglerng is located in a contested area because none of Nanglerng’s residents hold the legal rights to their lands on which they have lived for generations. In fact, the members of COMMUNITY LAB have worked to better and engage with the community through art-led and social work projects, under different names—E-lerng. Examples of E-lerng’s works since 2007 include the organization of Buffalo Field Festival, short film screening at the community’s heritage cinema, and street art workshops. Other events were designed to draw attention to underlying issues the community is currently facing, from the overcrowded living conditions, to urban poverty. Therefore, E-lerng has worked to act as a platform for the community to negotiate the rights to land and use art to strengthen the social fabric. COMMUNITY LAB was founded to assemble the information E-lerng and its collaborators such as Studio Upcircle have gathered throughout the years, whether it be community’s collective memories, past project’s successes and lessons, or the area’s geographical history. COMMUNITY LAB continues to pursue the objectives and approaches E-lerng has done, and adds the focus on working on online and offline archives, as we recognize the grave and urgent importance of an archive that could act both as a record and resource.
