PHAYANCHANA

PHAYANCHANA

Phayanchana started with the creative design of all 44 Thai letters as graphics to address a childhood challenge faced by the designer, who struggled to memorize these letters. This is likely a common issue for many others as well. Presenting the letters through graphics helps make learning and memorization easier and more enjoyable. The next project, “Sarn Akson,” expands the design scope by using words to create lively images. It consists of shapes created from words, phrases, or sentences, blending visual beauty with textual meaning. The well-known collection is the "Bangkok" series, depicting significant locations in the city. In the following year, the project integrated "Sarn Akson" with Thai handicrafts, leading to products such as using the word "khao-ma" in the design patterns for traditional fabric, which is then woven into "pa-khao-ma." For enamel trays, familiar as zinc trays, we designed floral patterns using letters, vowels, and tone marks, creating contemporary pieces while evoking nostalgic emotions through Thai design. This year, Phayanchana aims to develop these letters into everyday objects, transforming two-dimensional designs on paper into tangible items under “TypoSpective.” TypoSpective is a combination of Typography and Perspective. Typography focuses on the art of selecting, arranging, and designing letters to clearly convey messages, ensuring readability and accurate meaning. Perspective refers to creating images that appear as they would in reality, often used to present conceptual designs, such as architectural plans or interior design visuals. This project emphasizes creating depth and movement in letter design by arranging characters to achieve height variations, using light and shadow to enhance dimensionality, while maintaining clear communication. For example, we previously designed a graphic of a rose using the word "Rose" and have now created an actual rose that can be used as home decor. We also explored other words like bonfire, scissors, glasses, and hourglass. This project transforms previously designed graphics into functional objects that are aesthetically pleasing, simple, and effectively communicative. The outcome enhances the value of the Thai language, a solid foundation of our cultural heritage, while breaking down linguistic barriers and preserving the meanings, aesthetic sensibilities, and intrigue of letterforms.
