It is estimated that Thailand generates 2 million tons of plastic waste annually, yet only 21% is recycled, while the remaining 79% ends up in landfills or lingers in the environment. This is where the idea for Mega Mat was bornâa project that encourages people to make better use of plastic through reuse and recycling. Behind this giant mat is a collaboration between MVRDV Architects, the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), PTT Global Chemicals (PTTGC), and the Netherlands Embassy.Mats have been a household staple in Thai culture for generations. For Bangkok Design Week 2025, this everyday item has been reimagined using recycled plastic and expanded to cover 860 square meters at Lan Khon Mueang in front of the Bangkok City Hall. Designed as an urban living room, it invites city dwellers to gather, rest, and engage with the space. The matâs patterns, shapes, and colors draw inspiration from the roof of Wat Suthat Thepwararam, located just across the street, and each piece is woven with traditional designs that reflect Thailandâs rich artistic and cultural heritage. Many may wonderâwhat happens to the mat after the event? No need to worry. The entire mat will be dismantled and repurposedârecycled into bags and other products, given as souvenirs, and even donated to temples in need.Beyond the giant Mega Mat, the surrounding area also features a showcase of innovative products made from unexpected alternative materialsâlike Coffee Chaff. Design brand MORE brings a unique lineup of creations, including lamps, tables, benches, vases, and coasters, all crafted from this sustainable material.Come relax on Mega Mat and explore the creative works by MORE at Bangkok Design Week 2025 âDesign Up+ Risingâ at Lan Khon Mueang, Phra Nakhon, from February 15-23, 2025.#BKKDW2025#BangkokDesignWeek#DesignUpRising#āļāļāļāđāļāļāļāļĢāđāļāļĄāļāļ§āļ

Sponsor Highlight #6 EM DISTRIC
” When we opened EMPORIUM 20 years ago, art was already a part of our shopping center. With EMQUARTIER, we continued to integrate art into our activities. Now, EMSPHERE is the final piece that completes EM DISTRICT, it becomes even more exciting because this space is designed for the new generation, with art embedded in every floor. Thatâs when we realized that EM DISTRICT was ready to be a part of Bangkok Design Week.âSuthavadee Sirithanachai, Vice President – Marketing EM DISTRICT, shared this vision with us, explaining how EM DISTRICT partnered with CEA and The Head and The Heart Studio to launch the Academic Program, offering design students from various institutions a platform to prepare for their transition into the creative industry. This collaboration resulted in 10 art installations spread throughout EM DISTRICT, starting from Phrom Phong BTS Station and extending through the skywalk into EMSPHERE. K.TUK teased that many of these works not only feature striking visuals and playful concepts but also invite audience interaction.âOur concept is Here,_____________Everyday. You can fill in the blank however you like because, for many Thais, shopping malls arenât just for shoppingâthey are a part of everyday urban life, a place to relax ,connect and inspire.âDuring the projectâs development, EM DISTRICT brought in Thiranop Wangsilpakun, a concept and graphic design expert from TNOP DESIGN, and Simon Pillard, the creative director behind The Mall Groupâs visual art and also Marketing team to mentor the students.âIn the coming years, we hope to lead the Sukhumvit-Phrom Phong area into becoming a full-fledged ART DISTRICT. We believe art should be embedded in everyday life, shaping our society in meaningful ways.âAll 10 installations are set to welcome visitors at Bangkok Design Week 2025 âDesign Up+ Risingâ from February 8-23, 2025 at EM DISTRICT, the BTS Skywalk, and in the Emsphere shopping mall. For more details on Academic Program: Here,_____________Everyday, visit: https://www.bangkokdesignweek.com/bkkdw2025/program/125254?fbclid=IwY2xjawIQHeVleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHeQDxBwwDH5OVJckp4jsSU87ZG3B6l9Cv9XyD0YabkZtT-cUityCIjVlVQ_aem_iPFLD28G2jm69UJRghQfLg#BKKDW2025#BangkokDesignWeek#DesignUpRising#āļāļāļāđāļāļāļāļĢāđāļāļĄāļāļ§āļ

Sponsor Highlight #4 TAT
According to research by Lourens J.J. Meijer, Thailand generates 23 million tons of marine waste per year, ranking 10th in the world. If the situation continues, itâs not just sea turtles that will disappearâThailandâs marine resources in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are also gradually being destroyed until nothing remains but waste. With this concern in mind, Erblarp Sripirom, Director of Tourism Products at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), aims to raise awareness of marine waste among travelers. To bring this message to life, TAT has collaborated with artist WISHULADA (Wischulada Puntarunwong) to create âUnderwater Worldâ, an art installation inspired by Thailandâs aquariums. Made entirely from reused and upcycled waste collected from the tourism industry and discarded materials from TAT employees, the piece transforms plastic bottles, straws, and snack wrappers into a thought-provoking experience. This installation highlights both the deterioration of marine ecosystems and the beauty that remains, urging visitors to reflect on their role in reducing waste and protecting natural resources for the future.TATâs ultimate goal is to lead Thailandâs tourism industry towards Responsible Tourism, ensuring sustainable practices while distributing economic benefits to local communities.Experience âUnderwater Worldâ at Bangkok Design Week 2025 âDesign Up+ Risingâ, on the 4th floor of TCDC Resource Center, Grand Postal Building, from February 8-16, 2025.ð More details on âUnderwater Worldâ:https://www.bangkokdesignweek.com/bkkdw2025/program/126466#BKKDW2025#BangkokDesignWeek#DesignUpRising#āļāļāļāđāļāļāļāļĢāđāļāļĄāļāļ§āļ

If we put it simply, this is an immersive exhibition designed to showcase the potential of design and the relationship between wind and the five human senses. It is the result of a collaboration between Hatari and Habits Design Studio, the Milan-based studio behind Hatariâs complete rebranding. For those who visited Bangkok Design Week (BKKDW) 2024, this exhibition serves as a continuation of last yearâs Designing the Wind.âAfter introducing our design journey last year, we wanted to take a more abstract approach this time. Our concept, â500 Cubic Meters of Wind,â explores how wind interacts with our five senses, creating a sensory experience that visitors can truly feel,â explained Tassaluck Panichtrakul, Assistant Managing Director of Research & Development at Hatari.âWe see global trends shifting, and consumer preferences changing. Fans are no longer just electrical appliancesâdesign has become a key factor in purchasing decisions. Now, we need to create wind that aligns with todayâs lifestyles,â added Chanya Panichtrakul, Assistant Managing Director of Sales & Marketing, emphasizing the exhibitionâs focus on user experience. The Hatari X Habits: 500 Cubic Meters of Wind exhibition is divided into three key zones:âDesign Fieldâ, the exhibitionâs highlight, features a large rectangular structure filled with natural and uniquely Thai materials. For the latter, Hatari has partnered with Guss Damn Good to create a special ice cream flavor inspired by Hatariâs wind.âDesign Libraryâ showcases Hatariâs fan collection, arranged in a museum-like setting. This section highlights the results of last yearâs fan redesign journey, which was the main theme of the previous exhibition.âDesign Labâ brings together Hatari, Habits Design Studio, and the Department of Industrial Design at Chulalongkorn Universityâs Faculty of Architecture. Through this collaboration, young designers participated in hands-on workshops with world-class designers. Hatariâs mission to support Thai talent and the local design industry is reflected here, with four curated student projects on display.âOne of our goals is to contribute to Thailandâs design industry.
