Biodiversity-Bangkok Dragon - Canal link History of Bangkok

The original area of Bang Kho Yai is rich in history, having once been part of the old Chao Phraya River. From the reign of King Narai the Great to King Taksin the Great, this significant area was selected as the capital city, continuing to hold many historical narratives into the early Rattanakosin period. Despite urban encroachment and transformation into a concrete city, the area retains the essence of its original garden landscape, serving as the last green space supporting biodiversity in Bangkok Yai. This includes various plants and wildlife that have adapted to the chaotic urban environment, highlighting the need for preservation. Walking, exploring, and engaging with the Bangkok Yai area can deepen understanding of the importance of environmental conservation, cultural heritage, traditional lifestyles, and the original architecture, which are rapidly disappearing due to land development. Conducting walking surveys alongside scientific research methods, while considering the historical context, allows for collecting valuable data on wildlife, vegetation, land conditions, canals, and local lifestyles. This includes information about the Bangkok Dragon, or monitor lizard, which serves as a district mascot and an indicator of biodiversity potential. Connecting narratives to create district highlights can enhance tourism development and prevent biodiversity loss.
