PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN SOS: Urban lounge

What does a Thai public space really look like? In Bangkok, lively gathering spots often appear not in official plazas, but at street corners, in-between spaces, and tiny pockets where people naturally pause, chat, and come together. These everyday “living corners” reveal behaviors worth decoding—and they inspire fresh ideas for designing inclusive public spaces for all ages. This year, Bangkok Design Week 2026 transforms the Unakan Road median into a people-centered urban experiment. The project creates a Green Linkage from Sam Yot MRT Station to Lan Kon Mueang, opening new pedestrian paths, expanding walkable edges, and offering zones to sit, observe, play, and rediscover the neighborhood. Urban Lounge is designed to resemble a living organism growing on the Unakan traffic island—starting from the ground, sprouting, and blooming into life. Like children who learn and grow through experience, this space demonstrates how small city areas can thrive when people use them and create meaning together. There are three zones: Zone 1: SOIL A safe starting point, good for trying to sit, crawl, and begin exploring. Zone 2: SPROUT A bright space, easy to move around, inviting you to try climbing, stepping, and finding new things in a fun way. Zone 3: SPRING An open space full of life, inviting you to pause, look around, and spend time together.
