Wastematters is an ongoing campaign and design initiative dedicated to turning food waste into valuable, tangible products while increasing awareness of the problems of food waste. Launched during Bangkok Design Week 2023 at TCDC Charoenkrung, the project raises awareness about the scale of food waste while providing a direct, creative solution: transforming food waste into design objects that can be appreciated and used in everyday life. At the heart of Wastematters is the belief that food waste should not be the end of a cycle, but rather the beginning of a new one. We work closely with partner restaurants across Bangkok, who collect and separate their food scraps such as eggshells, mussel and oyster shells, coffee grounds, and onion skins. These materials, often overlooked as useless, are carefully processed and developed into sustainable composites. Through experimentation in material science and craft, we transform them into durable, functional, and beautiful objects. Our current collection includes bespoke jewelry, tableware, decorative items, and home accessories, all handmade and uniquely textured by the natural properties of the waste materials. Each product not only carries a distinct aesthetic but also tells a story of circularity—where waste is reimagined as value. The campaign aspires to shift perceptions of food waste, moving it from something to be discarded to something with potential. By bringing these pieces back to the dining table, Wastematters symbolically completes the cycle: what was once waste returns as a meaningful object that sparks conversation and change. Wastematters is more than a product line—it is a movement towards sustainable consumption, community collaboration, and design innovation. Through sales and visibility, we hope to expand our partner network, increase the volume of waste collected, and scale the impact of our material research.
