ARCANE

A Garden Too Secret

According to Asst Prof Niramon Serisakul, director of the Urban Design and Development Center (UDDC) at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok provides only 3m2 of publicly accessible green space per person, far below the minimum standard 9m2/person recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). While this is not a problem that can be solved without action at the political level, conversion can be supported to showcase Bangkok’s immense opportunity to become more livable. ‘A Garden Too Secret’ stands both for the scarcity of green areas in Bangkok and for the extreme beauty of its vegetation. By walking into the secret garden "each visitor will be able to experience their 3m2 of green". It is a showcase of how Bangkok’s climate nurtures lush vegetation and a rich biodiversity providing the perfect opportunity for plants to become truly part of the city’s identity, and intends to be an immersive experience into a curated space that showcases the aesthetic of local plants combined with artificial lighting and mist. The installation was proposed as a 50m2 square space defined by a perimeter of translucent fabric where lush vegetation appears blurred from inside. Within, participants will experience the potential of a greener Bangkok.
