LOU HIEB SENG

LOU HIEB SENG

Trace the story of a grandfather who journeyed to Thailand from mainland China by visiting his longstanding home. From his beginnings in the palm sugar business to the establishment of his corporation Lou Hieb Seng, every corner of the house reveals a different chapter, with the patterns on the decaying floor and dilapidated walls telling of how the home adapted and changed as his family and business grew. The palm sugar trade that once inhabited the house inspired the granddaughter of the original owner, now an architect, to explore how the old building has become a fixture of its community and seek to share its essence in the urban context through creativity. The designer began surveying her grandfather's legacy by collecting architectural knowledge of the old building and its renovation history in order to stage a creative and living exhibition. Paying homage to how her grandfather once sourced palm sugar from various providers, the display is a collaboration of various designers. An experimental space exploring the possibilities of an old building once creativity is applied, the Lou Hieb Seng house also provides opportunities for creators to collaborate and engage with ideas for old buildings, a starting point in support of urbanNICEzation aiming for Bangkok to be a city friendly to its abundant old buildings.
