Bangpho Wood Street

The Gate of Bangpho

The Gate of Bangpho The wooden arch that comprises the gate to Pracha Naruemit community is a beautiful and rare example of delicate woodwork and a true identifying trait of the area. The arch was constructed in 1997 and is present at both the entrance and exit of Sai Mai, or Wood Way, road. The entrance gate connects to Pracharat Sai 1 Soi 24 while the exit connects to Soi Krungthep-Nonthaburi 5. The arches were crafted to differentiate the community and were designed by Ajarn Sudsakorn Chaisem, an honored Thai art and sculpture expert, with funding from community store operators. Crafting of the arches was done by skilled woodworkers from within Pracha Naruemit. The design of the gates takes inpsiration from the old archways of Woeng Nakhon Khasem in Samphantawong district of Bangkok, featuring intricate wooden carvings and colonial architectural stylings. The curved wood of the arches resembles patterns on ginger bread, hinting at the Western influences popular during the era of King Rama V while the golden elephant against a red background within a circle was the official stamp of Bangsue District at the time. Numerous more details tell the history of the community and its dominant profession on the gate measuring 8 meters tall and 10 meters wide.
