NICE FOR BUSINESS

NICE FOR BUSINESSUrban-NICE city living for people through creative businessEvery business person knows, good business is all about the location. The location is correlated with many factors in the area such as travel routes, travellers, and community lifestyle. The urban city is a driving factor for the development of the small and larger economy. The more we support the development of the city, generate more income for businesses, and add more value to the community, the better the people’s lives and pockets.  The interesting challenge for Bangkok Design Week 2023 urban‘NICE’zation is finding ways to urbaNICE the city for the business and make the lives of the people better, especially ways to generate income for smaller businesses or SME community businesses. Today, we are also presenting groups in Thailand who are actively pushing new business ideas. Let’s see the variety of ideas that have to generate interesting business.Together in the Community Business ModelMany big businesses focus on securing and strengthening their business and rid of their competitors. But right now, the coming together of small people forming networks and working together to help grow their businesses are formed. Though it is slow, they’re growing together, helping each other out, and having big smiles rather than shedding tears. The Facebook page ‘Tum – Ma – Ha – Kin’, is a new generation collective of small business owners in the fashion industry where they intend to scrap the belief that ‘the secret to being successful is best kept a secret. But this collective tossed that thought aside and focus on sharing knowledge and resources for everyone to become successful. So, this page is full of knowledge and business techniques on the resources and materials for the page followers to learn and become experts as well as strengthen their business, create a strong network of producers and fair trade and equal job opportunities in the community. Starting business owners do not have to always go with a large-scale business which causes the smaller business to cease. The page movement has had a positive impact on the fashion industry as a whole, widening the industry, and producing more opportunities for smaller businesses. Let’s also have a looking at the food industry. Due to the increasing use of food delivery platforms, the shops have a chance to grow and increase their income. But many shops in the community are missing out. A group of people came together to address this issue, forming ‘Tam sang – Tam song’ in the Lad Phrao 101 area, with the delivery fee equal to the price of a local motorcycle taxi. This new model of food delivery is formed from the community network of people, local food shops, and motorcycle taxis which helps strengthen and secure their jobs and income within the community. Business Solutions for the City, as well as the PeopleWhen there’s a problem, people would need a solution. The sentiment inspires interesting ideas for a new business model which is building a business that solves the city’s problems as well as addressing the issue people face.  Chumanee, a movable wash & dry truck is one of the businesses that conceive with this sentiment. The program is a collaboration between a large wash & dry franchise Otteri and Mirror Foundation under the project ‘Jang wan kha (Hire Me) where the project supports the hiring of the elderly and homeless to have income and get back on track and their feet. This program is also a solution for those elderly and homeless to be in good health and hygiene, and have a better life, through the campaign ‘Fashion Sunjon’. The campaign offers homeless people free clothes and wash & dry stations, as well as recruiting more people to join the project to earn income and get back on track and live a better life. Solving the issue of many homeless in the city as well. On to another area, ‘We Chef Thailand’ is a platform for Food Trucks business owners in Thailand that try to help the industry grow without waiting for special events hire. Not only they’re trying to introduce and spread awareness about Food Truck, but they’re also looking out for spaces in Bangkok that haven’t been utilised to generate income for the area. By putting food trucks into underutilize areas, helping create the food truck ecosystem and generating regular income for the food truck owners, and not relying on inconsistent opportunities and income from special events.A Business that keeps up with the WorldIt is common in business to keep up with the trends of the world, many interesting new businesses are popping up in Bangkok. The first business we’re talking about today is the business of making people, School of Changemakers, supporting people who want to make a change in the community. The School gathers people who have many different interests from various fields to create campaigns and solve issues like education inequality issue, violence and gender inequality, or environmental issue. Another interesting startup is TasteBud, which is interested in food consumption and environmental issues and also forms Future Food to help push and create a human food ecosystem that is more sustainable. By adhering to BIO Tech and Food Tech, together with the networks creating programs for people to get to know more about the future of food.  Let’s now take a look at the fashion sphere. There’s ‘Loopers’ a platform with the slogan ‘Slow Fashion. In contrast with the ideas of the majority of the fashion industry where everything seems to be fast fashion, always keeping up with the trends. Loopers recognizes the issue and wants to find solutions and address the issue of environmental waste and labour from the fashion industry by advocating for people to buy secondhand clothes. The platform provides all the information for buyers, such as where the piece is manufactured, doing the due diligence for the clothing pieces, so that the buyer feels at ease, and also taking care of the delivery services. With Loopers’s business idea, the second-hand clothes industry is growing and becoming widely interested by many without using more resources in the world. These are only a few of the new and interesting businesses that create a nice impact on the city. Everyone must already have some ideas. Please don’t forget to share with us at Bangkok Design Week 2023 urban‘NICE’zation. Let’s join together to make Bangkok a dream city.–Bangkok Design Week 2023urban‘NICE’zation เมือง-มิตร-ดี4-12 February 2023#BKKDW2023#BangkokDesignWeek#urbanNICEzation

NICE FOR CULTURE

NICE FOR CULTUREUnfreeze culture with Soft powerCities are the melting pots of various ideas and diverse cultures which depict the context of urban community and urbanites’ lifestyles. Some may think that to drive the economy, vision and policies are of utmost priority. However, cultures are one of the key factors in revitalizing the economy and circulating income within the communities. Since cultures could be a potential export to drive tourism as well! Our ideal urban‘NICE’zation, therefore, should be a place where various cultures are welcomed into play. It should be a place where people can engage and appreciate cultures without them being frozen in time, dive deep into and alter some cultures with creativity. There are ancient cultures to be protected, preserved and elaborated, there are new and secondary cultures or soft power from which we can initiate ideas and create values from.Bangkok Design Week 2023 would like to invite everyone on a tour of striking ideas about cultures that happened in our city. Some are from a small group of people who want to broaden the possibilities of cultures. Just in case you get Bangkok inspired!Pushing Thai Music into the Stream of International Music RealmThe rise of T-pop is indeed an exciting current. However, the tide is changing now as big labels and the masses have shifted their attention and cultivated their support in Thai music groups and rising stars such as 4EVE, PiXXiE, PROXIE, ATLAS, MATCHA or ALLY. Furthermore, the debut of “T-pop stage”, a TV program where Thai pop stars are invited to perform and enter the contest which receives tremendous cheers from fans also brings about opportunities for T-pop music to break into international levels.   Not only is pop music that gets love and support, but there is also a spot for Thai-indie music. “Fungjai” (pun intended in Thai as ‘Listen to the heart’), is a community that supports singers, and bands by hosting concerts on various platforms, both offline and online. Fungi hopes that people get to experience new music with an open heart. Anyone interested in finding a muse to your ears can visit https://www.fungjai.com/home      One more unique muse to your ears is “Hear and Found”, a group that supports regional, local and ethnic music as they value the unique identities of each community. There emerges a business model that is built on (and for) local music where they support local musiccopyright, and build a library for people to browse and get to know more about each unique sound of ethics. Feeling interested? Let’s go explore https://hearandfound.com.Pave a new route, create a new experienceOur journey experience when we explore cities usually depends on our route plan. Creating a new travel route is like creating a new sensation and experience for visitors.     One of the most famous, spiritual and considered touristy routes is “8 Shrines Route Ratchaprasong”. This is the route just for both merit makers and spiritual believers with a how-to handbook on how to worship. The map allows visitors to visit 8 shrines within the area. This is not just a route for encouraging merit but also encouraging the gastronomy economy and malls around the area as well.    One of the artistic routes in Bangkok that many of you might not know is the “Pathumwan Art Route”. The route is a project with the collaboration between art and culture areas within the Pathumwan district where they are all pinned down on a map designed for people to walk through museums and local art communities. The museums include Bangkok Art and Cultural Center (BACC), Yelo House, Jim Thompson House, Ban-Krua Muslim Community Museum which features handwoven clothing and FAAMAI Dome, a place for digital art. This route invites everyone to art and culture-hopping, experiencing local lifestyle and extending your gaze to modern art also!

NICE FOR MOBILITY

NICE FOR MOBILITYTransport solutions start with our ideasThe quality of urbanites’ lives correlates to mobility and the public transport system within the city. The more accessible the transport system, the better quality of lives urbanites are living. And the theme for Bangkok Design Week 2023 – urban‘NICE’zation will focus on the importance of creative ideas and efficient innovation for the people’s convenience and safety. Also creating a new transport experience for everyone such as upgrading public transport signage, reorganizing the footpath, and even advocating for an environment-friendly or clean energy public transport.Although the transportation system is a massive infrastructural issue that required big entities to make a visible change that does not mean little people like us cannot take part in the change and come up with solutions. So today we want to introduce groups of small creatives and people who have decided to create change and address the public transport issue in Bangkok and make a better travelling experience for everyone.Mayday: Pushing Public Transport forward, repairing Bangkok’s Main ArteriesThere is a new transport system emerging everywhere like sky trains, underground trains, and transport services through application platforms. But the bus is still the most used transport by people at every level, it gives service as the main arteries of Bangkok that needs much attention. As many know, the infamous bus system is complex and required a lot of knowledge and a deep understanding of local roads and traffic nature to utilize the transport to its fullest potential. There are often situations where one encounters the complexity of the routes, uncertain whether you take the right bus to go to your desired destination due to a lack of information to check beforehand. Therefore, a group of people who are passionate about Thai buses and specialize in urban planning like Mayday, have decided to come together and create ideas to tackle this issue. The team started small by redesigning signage for route information at the bus stop and route information infographic stickers plastered inside the bus making it easy to understand by everyone. This pushes the importance of upgrading public transport for people with limited funds. The Facebook page has also become an online space to share fun route information, so people can see its importance and turns to take the bus more. It also provides important information about the changes in the bus service or other public transportation in Bangkok with the slogan ‘Small Change, Big Move.’ We believe that no matter how small the steps we take, we are an inch closer to the people of Bangkok having equal access to public transport. Mayday has become the prime example of a collective of small people coming together to make the change, pushing the government sectors to adopt the bus stop designs we seen around Bangkok today.Wayfinding Bangkok : Signage explorerWayfinding Bangkok is a detective-explorer taking you around Bangkok and exploring the wayfinding signages in Bangkok like in the underground train stations, on the street or even inside the malls. Addressing the issue of signage communications and suggesting fun solutions so that everyone can have a better travelling experience through skilled graphics. Also providing a helpful guide for travelling routes for interested people or the younger generations who are haven’t use the public transport. Moreover, the issue raised was more helpful than not for official sectors to understand and paying attention to find the solutions.UDDC: Ignite the “Good Walk” CityUDDC or Urban Design and Development Center serves as an entity connecting networks of specialists and urban developers to come together and study urban problems and urban planning development. We believe city development and revitalization is everybody’s important mission and UDDC’s priority is to make Bangkok a friendlier city for walking. As one of the projects ‘Good Walk’ is hoped to overcome the problems lots of urbanites are facing such as long commune and traffic jams, as well as an economic trap. The project also hopes to support and create new economic and touristic areas through a revitalization of local culture. UDDC’s strategy is to start designing a sandbox district for Good Walk, in a district that is already rich with economic, physical, and environmental potential. To realize the project, there must be a planned list of involved entities required to cooperate and go through with the project. So that everyone who will benefit like the citizen, the private, and government sectors come together and cooperate in the management to develop it into a truly walkable and sustainable district.Rabbit Crossing: Look out for pedestrians and advocate the law for road safetyThe countries that prioritize ‘cars’ over ‘pedestrians’ are bound to experience lots of fatal car accidents at crosswalks or on the roads. A gloomy situation occurred, family and friends lost their loved ones – like a fatal accident where Doctor Kratai Waraluck was hit by a motorcycle running through a marked crosswalk without slowing down. The accident cause her friends to come together and created a group ‘Rabbit Crossing’, to advocate for the proper implementation of crosswalk law and promote a more safe crosswalk for the pedestrian in the community. And also call for more driving discipline in the hopes that drivers are mindful and considerate of the pedestrian.  The Facebook page also has a support system, taking in reports of the unsafe crosswalk because a little issue like this can cause uncalled-for loss of lives. No matter who you are, if you notice an unsafe crosswalk or any unwarranted situations you can report them to the page ‘Rabbit Crossing’ to coordinate and resolve – which is very helpful for the community.Alternative Vehicles: The solution for urbanites and the environmentThere’s no denying that transportation played a major role in causing the environmental issue in the city. Therefore, many groups in the public and private sectors are pushing for vehicles that consume clean energy for both personal and industrial purposes.  One of the groups is ETRAN, a new generation startup that develops and produces clean energy electric vehicles in Thailand with the slogan ‘Drive The Better World.’ ETRAN’s intention is to provide a driving experience that is nice for the environment. The vehicle supported both industrial and labour use. Plus, the price is low because the group wants to encourage everyone to use it daily and consider the environment more. There is also an ETRAN Power Station setup available 24/7 to help with battery changes without wasting time waiting for a charge. All you need to do is swap out the battery and get back on track immediately.  Another one is the application platform Muvmi, an electric Tuk-Tuk transport service where all the serviced vehicles use clean electric energy which is nice for the environment. Additionally, the platform is a ridesharing system where the Tuk-tuk will pick up passengers at multiple stops along the way for those who are heading to the destinations along the routes. Though the rideshare takes a bit more time for the passenger the cost on the environment is greatly reduced. Ridesharing saves passengers’ pockets as well or for those who prefer to have the car to themselves, there’s an option for that as well with the higher price.Of course, the whole transport system in Bangkok cannot be turned around overnight but as long as many people start making small changes together it will urban ‘Nice’ the transport system for the better. We, as urbanites can take part in this change by coming up with creative ideas and innovative solutions to help and make it nicer to transport within the city.  Still, stuck for ideas? Just start by changing one’s travel behaviour, exploring the issue of the area by walking on the footpath and driving safely and mindfully, or joining a group and making an alliance in the community with whom are into the same issues. Or come and check out Bangkok Design Week 2023 under the theme urban‘NICE’zation, we guarantee that sparks will fly!–Bangkok Design Week 2023urban‘NICE’zation เมือง-มิตร-ดี4-12 February 2023#BKKDW2023#BangkokDesignWeek#urbanNICEzation

Nice City - Nice Living is Possible

Nice City – Nice Living is Possible6 projects around the world that prove urban‘NICE’zation possible Environment and surrounding cultures are the key factors in raising and shaping human lives. Undoubtedly, ‘cities’ affect people’s happiness and urbanization both positively and negatively. As now there has been a regular flow from suburbs into the city for jobs, the rush and sprint lifestyle and scarcity emerge. However, there might be potential solutions to these issues.  Let’s explore  6 challenging (and fun!) projects from around the world which aim to tackle urbanization issues in the depth of many aspects such as environment, transportation or even local economy issues. Behind these projects are cooperation from the ‘people’ and the organization of various ranges, they portray tangible proof of how everyone can be part of city development and make an urban‘NICE’zation possible.  If you’re ready, let’s see how they do it!Project 1: Solar-Powered Farmers’ Market  A fresh food market that hits both the issues with one stone :  environment issue and local economy boom. Grower’s Market is in Albuquerque city in New Mexico, USA. The farmers’ market allows locals, farmers or retailers to do business, piping more income and eventually leading to a rise in tourism to the community.     Stimulating the local economy is not the only key feature of this market, it also prioritizes the environment issue . The market relies on natural fuel to drive the economy such as solar cells, cash machines or even devices for entertainment like speakers and amplifiers–-they all run on natural energy. Furthermore, the market aims to reduce plastic trash and packages by issuing a policy for people to bring their grocery bags and containers for their shopping. The market also nudges people to travel to the market by bicycles rather than cars by prioritizing bicycle parking lots and bicycle facilities.Project 2 : Oslo–A city that prioritizes green transportationSolving challenges through the cooperation of the authorities and the people. In 2019, Oslo, Norway, was selected as the green city in the Europe region with the way they developed the city to match the environment-friendly criteria. One of Oslo’s priorities is the Eco-Friendly transportation system. The city issues a policy that encourages people to use their private cars less, use electric cars more and revolutionize the whole public transit system to reduce their carbon footprint. There emerged the Green Charge in Oslo, electric charging stations with corporations from various sectors and cities in Europe, to make the charging stations a fundamental infrastructure for the people either in the parking lots or in the apartments. The source of electricity comes from natural fuels such as sunlight and public electrical distributors. Within the next 10 years, Oslo is changing its taxis into wireless-charge electric ones. In addition, the government also promoted reshaping some urban spaces to green footpaths instead of roads for automobiles, creating recreational spaces for leisure and culture. Allowing only bicycles and public transportation to get into the city, allows the urbanites to walk along nature, get healthier from exercising and still gain the same easy access to transit.Project 3 : Restart Project: Electronic Waste Management under the theme “Don’t despair, just repair!” A project that contextualizes the online world of managing electronic waste. Electronic waste has entered the global scene and has affected the environment broadly, as it increases along with technological advancement and a larger world population. However, common ground and understanding of electronic waste management are not quite prevalent. Some just throw them away without thinking of recycling, that’s the start of the ‘Restart Project’ in London, England. The project was launched in 2013 from the potential of the ‘common people in London who see society’s issues from the electronic waste piles. They wanted to create a new digital culture in the community where people do not discard electronic waste because they’re broken, but rather fix it, recycle it or create a new bond or even upcycle them. They started by holding a class in the community on how they can create a new meaning and usage out of these old pieces and promote the recycling culture in daily life.     The Restart project has become a non-profit organization in 2018. There are more than 59 members who participate as activists. They are not only working in England but also work with members from other countries around the world such as Italy, Spain, Sweden and New Zealand. Their work also focuses on small cities because they believe that as long as people learn how to fix and lengthen the life of electronic devices, the world is getting one step closer to being saved from the environmental and economic crisis.Project 4 : Rainbow village Taichung Rainbow Village: from an abandoned veteran village to the top landmark!Hometown renovation to promote the local economyThis brilliant idea was started by a Taiwanese grandpa named Huang Yung-Fu, who is concerned that the remote veteran village that he is living in would soon be abandoned as people move to the economic area for employment. Investors are snatching lands and demolishing buildings, making them into another economic area. But, Huang’s grandpa had a vision that this village can transform into a new economic area through creativity, not through money. Grandpa Huang dedicated his time and portrayed his art skill in painting vibrant colours onto the walls, starting from his own house as a statement of his will to preserve his place. Neighbors all supported him to paint the whole village rainbow. This eventually leads to grandpa Huang being able to preserve the area, not in the name of an old remote veteran village but as a cultural asset named ‘Rainbow Village’. Moreover, this village has become a popular tourist attraction in the past four years, with the tourism industry expanding including more local art shops for future tourists to visit.Project 5: The Goods Line: A park for more creative spaceSupporting the community and the city’s livelihood by utilizing Creative Space‘The city is lonelier and more alienated than the suburban’ there goes the saying reflecting alienated private individuals’ lives in the cities. The new urban trend is to create projects that drive and facilitate creative culture spaces for people to live less lonely and connect to others more. That is the essence of ‘The Goods Line’ project in Sydney, Australia where the old train railway was renovated into a park for urban people. The park is structured by full fundamental infrastructures such as seats for talking, free WI-FI for creative working and partying, a kids’ playground for sport and entertainment zones for both athletes and anyone who wants to join. The space has become a venue for festivals and events alike. People can stroll or initiate group activities to acquire new skills here–developing the city and making it even more urban-Niced. This is not just a forgotten place renovation but a public space project that connects people.Project 6: Superkilen: A place that embraces diversityCenter space created for a better understanding of raceand cultural diversityWouldn’t the city be more welcoming if there is an accessible space where people can learn how to embrace diversity and enjoy the differences in humankind? This is what the ‘Superkilen’ project in Copenhagen, Denmark is trying to achieve by designing and constructing a park half a mile to portray ‘the beauty in diversity.    The park exhibits 60 diverse design works from different countries and cultures around the world along the vibrant pink area, which has become a cultural studies space. The works are mostly decorated in surrealist styles where everyone gets a chance to enjoy them such as the distinct palm tree from China and typical benches in the park from Los Angeles. All of these decorations invite people to get in touch with different cultures and blend in between–urging them to learn more about the ‘other’ as they are also a part of ‘our’ world. These are just six of the cities with an interesting, effective yet practical development plan to tackle urbanization issues. If some of you, readers, are now sparked with some ideas for Bangkok in any method. , on any platform please reach us at the upcoming Bangkok Design Week 2023. Let’s create an urban‘NICE’zation together!

Urban ‘NICE’ with BKKDW2023 Key Visual As the Covid situation is gradually resolved, we’re starting to see people coming out and returning to their normal lives in the city space more. So, this year BKKDW 2023’s key visual under the theme urban‘NICE’zation features the imagery of people engaging in many activities in the urban city area. Nut-Nuttapong Daovichitr or many known as Nut Dao, is a freelance illustrator, co-founder of Practical School of Design, and Owner of Lig whose works mostly consist of ‘people’ imagery as the main element in the design. He has taken the role to express urban‘NICE’zation theme through Nut Dao-style illustrations. The combination of selected shapes and forms, as well as the color palette for the Key Visual, has made the URBAN feels NICE at first sight. The important challenge this year is to invite creators from various fields to come together and be NICE to the city. The Key Visual can also be regarded as an important invitation card sent out to creators’ doorsteps to inspire and invites them to make the city better together.Start understanding urban‘NICE’zation Understanding the city, particularly a nice city, is the first step Nut Dao takes before starting the design process.  “I started with searching for the definition of a Nice city to understand what a nice city consists of. I found that Nice city doesn’t have to be just equipped with wide roads or a good commuting system but it should have diversity and well-covered convenient utilities that everyone can use in their daily lives, be within walking distance and don’t require cars.  Another factor that makes the city better is mixed-use space where people can utilize, and engage in activities, or anything they want. This provides opportunities for people to use free of charge and I believe that ‘people’ is the most important – the heart of the city. City development should have people in mind and must be people-centric.”The first and second direction Nut Dao proposed before combining the best elements from both into the final work.People + City = NiceUrban‘NICE’zation means the city is nice to the people, the people are nice to the city, and the city will be nice when there are nice people – these three definitions are the foundation for urban‘NICE’zation. “I always like to draw people into my work or some kind of human elements, so this theme is up my alley. The first direction I proposed didn’t mention the city at all, and focused on people and activities in the city – reflecting the notion that the city should provide space for these activities to make a Nice city. “Another direction proposed is more focused on the city, playing with shapes of mixed-use space and text layout. By creating the space first and later incorporating people into the space, showing the diverse use of space as represented through public space. “So, the final is taking the best of both directions into one. The small people in one direction are expanded, doing more activities and showing both the city and people together. I am focusing more on the friendly aspects of the designs that are accessible and easily understood by everyone.”Whether personal or commcercial projects, there’s always a human element in Nut Dao works.People, the Heart of urban‘NICE’zation  Without the people, the city would be lifeless. Because the people are the heart of the city, Nut Dao’s characters are intentionally designed to represent every citizen in the city and express the friendship between the people and the city through the elements in the designs. “It is important for me to draw characters that represent diversity. I want to represent the disabled, elderly, kids, and entrepreneurs coming together. Through the use of a variety of shapes and figures that overlap to refer to the living together and the relationship between each other. “I used a variety of shapes, playing around the with the combination to create characters. The abstractness allows more layers and meaning that is fun to explore. I tried to mix every element of the city together.”Sketches for a diversity of characters where Nut Dao experiment with a variety of lines, shapes, and forms to represent the notion for different people living together in the city.A Nice Cool ToneColors are important elements that give refreshed feelings and make the city nicer. “When I think about a nice city, green space comes to mind. The color is easy on the eyes so the overall design comes out in a green tone. Apart from the urban nice notion, I consider its use for communication purposes in printouts, signage, and online materials as well. So, I added a more vibrant green, mix with other muted colors to create the depth and balance of the design to be easy on the eyes.”Hidden DistrictsThe creative districts participating in BKKDW this year have expanded into many areas, so Nut Dao cleverly designed and hide the elements of the districts in the Key Visual as well.“BKKDW 2023 will set dispersed around Bangkok, so I designed the elements to use within each district as well. Each district has their unique charms if I picked a place to represent each district. It may be hard to communicate so I chose to incorporate the initial letters of the district instead. Simplified the letter designs, incorporate them into the space and colors and hide them in the designs. You may not see it at first, but once you see it you see it always”Nice City at Everyone’s HandsApart from utilizing graphics to communicate a memorable visual for Bangkok Design Week 2023, the festival and Nut Dao both agree that making the city nice is something everyone should be concerned about and can better the city just by doing small things that create a ripple towards bigger change.“I want this year’s Key Visual to represent the big picture, showing a diversity of people. I hope that the viewer will get the sense of contributions, though it’s small it is an important part of the bigger picture.”–Art Director & Illustrator: Nuttapong Daovichitr (Nut)Assistant: Ployjaploen Paopanlerd (Bamie)Graphic Designer: Nayada Sangnak (Da)–Bangkok Design Week 2023urban‘NICE’zation เมือง-มิตร-ดี4-12 February 2023#BKKDW2023#BangkokDesignWeek#urbanNICEzation

What’s urban’NICE’zation?

What’s urban’NICE’zation?City or habitat is one of the factors that have a major impact on urban life which cannot be overlooked. Good management or proper urban planning will make people’s life much happier. As the city develops or grows alongside the world, the increased urban population within the city has become a great challenge that everyone has to find ways to handle and balance it. Though this seems like an overwhelming challenge, we believed it’s not out of the hands of Thai creatives. This year, Bangkok Design Week wants to invite everyone to join the discussion and imagine the possibilities for Bangkok, find out how to make the city an urban nice city. Making Bangkok a Nice city for people and business owners in various fields and occupations. Not only that, but also finding solutions, encouraging the Creative economy, creating a circular economy in Bangkok, and achieving this through the core idea of building a ‘Nice’ city for the people by building the people who are ‘Nice’ to the city.  The idea inspires the cooperation between sectors of small units in the community and larger entities such as the policy maker to join hands and pave the way towards possible solutions together. For this upcoming year, Bangkok Design Week have defined the year’s theme “urban‘NICE’zation” into 6 aspects – Environment, Mobility, Culture, Business, Community, and Diversity. Nice for Environment One of the first things that come to mind for young generations and city people is environmental problems. Air and water pollutions including plastics waste management are issues that hit close to everyone’s home. So, driving the Nice for the environment movement includes building a Circular economy aiming to have more public space in the city and solve pollution and energy issues. By emphasizing making fewer individual and industrial scale digital footprints and allowing every single city inhabitant including small creatures to live in the city harmoniously and happily.  Nice for MobilityA public utility like the transport system is another important factor contributing to people’s happiness living in the city because travelling is a major part of living in Bangkok. Students and office workers, especially those, who have spent most of the day on the road would agree that it is a serious issue. So,  this year’s challenge is to seek new ideas and creative solutions that would solve the public transport issue in the city. By tackling small things everyone encounters like organizing the footpath, traffic lights, and transportation including way signage and symbols for safe travels giving a Nice experience to the city.Nice for Culture PreservationCultural development has been a hot topic in Thailand for a long time. For BKKDW urban‘NICE’zation there is more than being Nice to Culture in the traditional sense to protect and preserve disappearing culture. The goal is to recognize its importance and push the Soft power into a broader range and drives the economy and society forward. So, sparking new creative ideas including innovations that help adjust the traditional community to the changing time and continue to create a new business model as well as transform it into a product line and interesting creative local community district.Nice for Business & EconomyMost of the time, tourism has been Thailand’s main income engine, but the effects of the COVID-19 forced local business owners and creators to look back and see how important the city development is, building an edge for Bangkok by developing an attraction for overseas business investment and adding more economic value to the city. Our goal to urban‘NICE’ the city, therefore, is about finding ways for the city to attract investors and create a good impact on Thailand’s labour market as well as driving online business platforms and city infrastructure suitable for the new generation market.Nice for Community LivingThe community is the smallest unit in the city, but it played a major role in building a Nice city. As the infrastructure is catering to the city, the development should benefit people and develop their livelihood resources as well. Because without the strong and happy people in the community the city cannot be better. This year we are aiming to focus on supporting the idea of producing people whoare Nice to the city and also elevate the urban lives. Creating the basic infrastructure development for the city’s communities and providing more public spaces for creative and recreational activities that will encourage urbanites to up their skills and knowledge. All this is so that urbanites will be happy, healthy, and safe within the community where they live.Nice for Diversity Bangkok has always been known to embrace diversity, the melting pot of all kinds of diversity. Wouldn’t it be much better if we can make the city Nicer to the diverse inhabitants through new ideas and innovations or implementations?  It would be good to encourage movement within the social structure including various utilities that are truly convenient for everyone living in the city – no matter their gender identity, physical disadvantage, or vulnerability and support them to be able to live happily in their city.  Up to now you might get excited about the possibilities and get a clearer dream of Nice Bangkok. Keep in mind that change starts small from each and every one, one can become a moving part in the movement of change in making Bangkok Nicer, starting today. Or join us and start the change with Bangkok Design Week 2023. With many helping hands and creative contributions from everyone, every sector, the movement is going to be strong enough to make Bangkok Nicer than ever!
